Thermal Breaks and Energy Performance in High-rise Concrete Balconies

Abstract

Thermal bridging was a significant and under-explored issue in tall buildings at the time of this publication. There were only a few examples of manufactured thermal breaks being used in North America for high-rise construction in 2013. Nevertheless, the comparisons outlined in this paper are still relevant and questions on the relative benefits persist over a decade after the publication of this paper.

This paper explores how manufactured structural thermal breaks provide improvements over conventional continuous balcony slabs and intermittent concrete thermal breaks.
